My favorite Song
In 2010 I came across the album "Waterline (Ίσαλος Γραμμή)" that contains a collection of beautiful songs with sensitive tunes and poetic lyrics.
The music of this album is written by Giorgos Kazantzhs (Γιώργος Καζαντζής), a very talented composer who lives in Salonika. It seems nowadays that everything truly artistic is originated in our second largest city, Salonika, Northern Greece, (the true) Macedonia. Our capital, Athens, mostly hosts popular performers capable of making a lot of money with doubtful art!

In this album I love most songs but "The Bees (Μέλισσες)" and "The Eyes of Morpheus (Τα μάτια του Μορφέα)", I believe, are truly unique. It was the former song I first heard on the radio that intrigued me with its unusual lyrics and the deep voice of Fotini Belesiotou (Φωτεινή Βελεσιώτου). When, however, I obtained the album, the Εyes of Morpheus became my absolute favorite. It is this song I would like to share with you.

The Eyes of Morpheus

Song: Giorgos Bagiokhs (Γιώργος Μπαγιώκης)
Lyrics: Dhmhtrhs Pashalhs (Δημήτρης Πασχάλης)
Music: Giorgos Kazantzhs (Γιώργος Καζαντζής)

I will attempt to translate the lyrics, but I am not very sure about the final outcome. Unfortunately my English vocabulary is very focused on Science (even the literature I read is... Science Fiction!).

When friends are coming the wind starts blowing
and the monster of solitude
calms in its sight
their talk is like sweet wine
for all the company to drink
and the eyes of Morpheus
to stay open

Because the moments before they disappear
before they become memories
they follow the path
engraved by the heart

They meet during nightfall
for you to love them
and when they become memory
to long them again

When friends are leaving
it usually dawns
and the snow of solitude covers the sight
their word is comfort
and the soul a mirror
because no liar
is truly alive

Giorgos Bagiokhs (photo) has a very special voice. (Most) Greeks are used to such tunes and can appreciate his performance. Non-Greeks have to be open-minded (or rather open-hearted). Bagiokhs is so expressive when he sings about loneliness and friendship.

This beautiful song reminds me of my good friend and colleague Nikolaos Galatsanos who died from cancer on September 4, 2010, at the age of 52...
